The Arctic Monkeys are a good litmus test for those annoying, pretentious friends that everyone has who will never admit that a previously crappy band could possibly be good. Because, well, the arctic monkeys first album was an overwrought, too-tightly wound piece of poop. the second was meh. And then somehow (drugs + hanging out with Josh Homme too much?) they put out two really amazing albums and there’s a third one on the way.

This is the video for their most recent single (and the title track) which will appear on album #4, entitled Suck It And See. Coming this Halloween.

I think most people can agree (well, metal fans at least) that Mastodon‘s first two albums were amazing. There was a lot of debate over the last release and I can say I wasn’t a fan of the album. It was overwrought compared to their earlier stuff + teetered on the edge of cheesy butt-rock. All that aside, they made a slick choice hooking up with AJ Fosik for the cover art of The Hunter + if their recent single + accompanying video released through Adult Swim is any indication, the new album might shred souls.

YOOOOOOO! So, while looking through some old notebooks earlier this week I found my initial notes about starting a website, which had no name at the time but later became Hard Feelings. The number one feature I had written about over + over + over was mixtapes. I don’t think I ever wanted the site to be a music site but I have such a long history with music, from working at a record label to writing rock criticism to playing in bands + all the way back to going to my first punk shows as a little skate shit in the 90′s. Mixtapes seemed inevitable.

Somehow that got lost. I guess getting married, moving from state to state, being laid off + consequently starting my own biz with my wife, not to mention actually launching this blog + trying to keep up with it kept me from some of my original ideas. Well, NO MAS. I scrambled with this one but hopefully this is going to become a weekly feature on the site.

Mixtape #1, BIG MUFF, is all about fuzz + guitar tone. I found my Russian made Big Muff pedal in a closet when I moved last month + re-aquainted myself with the world of muffy, fuzzy, distorted guitars. There are some obvious ones here (SLEEP? Yep) + some less obvious choices like 60′s Cambodian rocker Ros Serey Sothea. And if anyone out there is disappointed by the exclusion of anything from Superfuzz Bigmuff, you know what? I don’t like Mudhoney + them’s the breaks.

I’m usually not a huge fan of Dovecoat Records’ Hooray For Earth but any music video that is both A) not a rehash of old film footage (yawn) and B) what I imagine a violent acid trip to look like gets an automatic post on the site. And you know what? I kind of like the song.
