Illustrations by Gaston Herrera always deal with compromising situations but lately his vision has been focused on cars. Specifically, cars being damaged. Cars being burnt, rained on, cars overrun by creatures. It’s a bizarre obsession but it definitely captured my attention.

Sketchy mashups of shapes, patterns + beasts by Clara-Iris Ramos. Some of these combinations end up as monsters, some as distinguishable animals + others as completely abstract blobs. These almost remind me of a cruder version of Meyoko.

I’ve always made odd creatures. My mom saved some drawings that I created when I was about three years old. The figures in these drawings show not only the distorted perceptions of a child, but a fascination with skulls, teeth, spirographic eyes, and invented body parts. This obsession with strange creatures continued throughout my youth. Monster models, war dioramas, dinosaurs, and horror movies [this included “Creature Double Feature” on Saturday afternoons, of course occupied much of my time.
