shanghai 5
Shanghai 5 is a 23 minute short film about the state of skateboarding in Shanghai. Directed, filmed + produced by Charles Lanceplaine. Thousands of skate kids in Shanghai? I had no idea. So rad!

sugipop @ portsmouth museum of art

Yesterday I finally had the chance to visit the Portsmouth Museum of Art + check out Sugipop, the show that’s been running for the last month or two. I’m really glad I did. The exhibit was advertised as an exploration of manga + anime, which is how it begins, but really it’s more of an exploration of contemporary Japanese art culture beyond those mediums.
I’ve never been a huge fan of either of the former, so I was excited to find some amazing pieces beyond the video screens playing anime. A lot of the work really sneaks up on you. Especially the KAWS piece below. You turn a corner and WHAM, it feels like it jumps up from the floor. There were great pieces hanging by Audrey Kawasaki, Murikami, Junko Mizuno + tons more. There were even cells from some original Astro Boy illustrations. Everything was nicely balanced with some classic 18th + 19th century Japanese painting, which I thought was a whip smart move.
If you’re local, GO CHECK IT OUT, it runs until the new year. If you’re not, I hope you’ll enjoy the photos + check out the artists. Sorry for the bad iPhone pictures; forgot my DSLR.

a skate regeneration
Another installation of the short film series featuring skater Kilian Martin by filmmaker Brett Novak. This kid gives 90′s Mullen a run for his money on the real!
i love stop motion
I Love Stop Motion by Chloe Fleury is the story of stop motion animation told using…stop motion animation obviously.
NIKLAUS TROXLER

The jazz posters of Swiss graphic designer Niklaus Troxler are some of the best we’ve ever seen. There’s no one clearly defined style here but plenty of treats for the eyes for sure. Love his use of type, too.
world of motion
“An exploration in nostalgia, the “World of Motion” is a tribute to man’s various achievements in transportation + technology.” Or, a 60′s inspired animated short by Colin Hesterly with a few of my favorite things: motorcycles + a soundtrack that sounds like Mark Mothersbaugh at his best.
the selby-george lois

I kinda hate The Selby for all its self-indulgent, staged visits to the cluttered estates of the sons + daughters of old rich people (with a few exceptions). You could cut the pretension with a chainsaw. But hey, The Selby, we’re cool now. Because you took a trip to the home of legendary surly art director George Lois.
esquivel
I could watch a skilled tradesperson working at their craft all day long. Any trade would do but cobblers have always had a special place in my heart. It’s a trade that seems more akin to metalsmithing than it does to any other craft under the ‘fashion’ umbrella. It’s amazing how much grit + labor going into making a good pair of shoes. This short, made by David Hubert + Olivier Staphylas for Esquivel shoes relies heavily on the textures + sounds from a cobblers studio.
