the selby-george lois

31st August 2010

georgelois-theselby-hf1

I kinda hate The Selby for all its self-indulgent, staged visits to the cluttered estates of  the sons + daughters of old rich people (with a few exceptions). You could cut the pretension with a chainsaw. But hey, The Selby, we’re cool now. Because you took a trip to the home of legendary surly art director George Lois.

esquivel

30th August 2010

I could watch a skilled tradesperson working at their craft all day long. Any trade would do but cobblers have always had a special place in my heart. It’s a trade that seems more akin to metalsmithing than it does to any other craft under the ‘fashion’ umbrella. It’s amazing how much grit + labor going into making a good pair of shoes. This short, made by David Hubert + Olivier Staphylas for Esquivel shoes relies heavily on the textures + sounds from a cobblers studio.

the pleasure is back

29th July 2010

adammedly-hf1

Adam Medley is the guy behind The pleasure is back, a longtime (and ongoing) project with a quite simple MO, couple a vintage advertisement with some kitschy piece of copy from a completely separate ad, wash, rinse, repeat. Some of the combinations (or Medleys, if you will, ZING BAM) are cute + funny while others are cutting + weighty. In Adam’s words, “…the mission of the project is to now have people happily buy crap carrying slogans of how great it is to be happy and buy crap in a way that’s less ironic than it is a sincere expression of their desperate embrace of the overwhelming, inescapable forces of consumerism in the 21st century.” He also has mugs for sale.

bill-murray_300x430

There’s a fantastic new interview in GQ’s comedy issue with Bill Murray, without whom, I’m realizing lately, our generation would be doomed. Not to mention generations to come. NEVER DIE, BILL MURRAY. Found via Jealous Girlfriend.

to have & to hold

12th April 2010

To Have & To Hold is a new film that explores the visual, cultural + spiritual importance of playing, collecting + owning vinyl. In the era of the WackBook DJ, movies like this seem increasingly necessary to keep vinyl from becoming more than an artifact. You’ll find interviews with legendary collectors like Bobbito Garcia, ?uestlove, Chuck D. + Bruce Ludvall, the owner of Bluenote. Bonus: sneaking a peek at their ABSURD record collections. BUY VINYL!

spot the tiger

9th April 2010

spotthetiger-hf

Spot The Tiger is a cool reader-driven site that couples really impressive editorial design + illustration with cultural and social surveys on a heap of important issues. The accompanying art is provided by some of my favorites: Mikey Burton, Richard Perez, Rik Lee, Damien Correll, Ed Nacional + about a million others. You can find a new poll + illustration weekly + there are some great interviews with select artists as well. Go get your anonymous debate on.

skateboardanimation

5th April 2010

If you’ve ever opened up an issue of Thrasher or Transworld Skateboarding, you’re familiar with the sequence shot. Artist Tilles Singer made this amazing stop motion short by cutting out the skaters in those magazine sequences + giving them new life. The results are very cool.

shop visit: bailey works

9th March 2010

baileyworkstour-hf1

I’m going to assume a good portion of you dear readers ride bikes because a) riding bikes is awesome + b) it’s awesome. Enough said. I’ll further guess that you bike riding citizens know the name Bailey Works because a) they’ve been producing handmade amazing bags since the 90’s + b) you need a dependable bag (that doesn’t look stupid) to tough out the mean streets.

You might remember I posted a review of a collaboration between Bodega, I.F. + Bailey Works a little while back? Well, luckily, BW is local + I was able to set up a little behind-the-scenes tour. Jon, the owner, was kind enough to have me in, show me some amazing prototypes he’s working on (GET PUMPED) + talk shop for a couple of hours. As a city cyclist + a fan of most things handmade, durable and good looking, I was excited to say the least.

I thought some of you might be excited too to take a look behind the counter at the Bailey Works operation. Because, remember, bike’s are awesome. Good bags are awesome. And handmade, local bags you can wear while you ride your awesome bike are…doubly awesome. I hope y’all enjoy the shop visit!
